Goethe, the poet, was the overwhelming force which made Weimar ‘Athens of the North’. His founding of the German National Theater, drew the composers Liszt, Wagner, Berlioz, Hummel, Strauss, the philosopher Nietzsche, the poets Schiller and Wieland and the Bauhaus architectural movement, to this hub of culture.

With the re-unification of Germany, Weimar was named the European Culture Capital in 1999 and restored to its pristine glory.

Weimar is located in idyllic Thuringia, the ‘green heart of Germany’ near Erfurt (W) and Leipzig (NE). Berlin is further North and Dresden is due East. The city is a true distillation of German cultural history. Home to J.S. Bach and birthplace of C.P.E Bach, Weimar was a prominent center for the arts.
